Development of a prototype controllable electrolyzer for regional smart grids

Douna Machinery receives funding for the following activities:

  • Setting up a prototype test setup and producing multiple interchangeable electrolyzer stacks.

From the climate agreement and the Green Deal, the transition to sustainable forms of energy is becoming increasingly important to achieve a (fully) sustainable and CO2-neutral energy supply by 2050. To reach this goal, renewable electricity generation needs to be utilized. However, the current challenge lies in the significant mismatch between electricity generation and consumption. To address this mismatch, large-scale solutions are being developed to convert renewable electricity into hydrogen using electrolysers for energy storage and to balance the demand and supply.

The objective of this project is to develop a prototype controllable electrolyzer for regional smart grids. The intended innovation is not only cost-effective but also has a higher efficiency compared to existing large-scale solutions in the market.

This project is co-funded as part of the Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
