Self-developed hydrogen electrolyser for education solutions

The purpose of this setup is both demonstration and realize  valuable insights. The setup has been carefully developed to enable extensive testing with various sensors, stacks, designs and components.

The complete Electrolyser is mounted on a mobile cart, which is equipped with a drip tray, splash screen and protective covers for safety purposes. Thanks to the castors, the cart is easy to move. Moreover, the cart is equipped with a perforated plate of stainless steel that allows quick adjustments to the set-up.

The setup is equipped with sensors including flow sensors, pressure sensors, conductivity sensors and various other sensors. These sensors enable researchers to measure various parameters of the system. Through an interface (yet to be developed), all values can be physically read out, allowing for optimal recording of data.

Here we are talking about an alkaline-Electrolyser is a device that splits water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) through electrolysis. Electrolysis is a process in which electric current is used to bring about a chemical reaction. In the case of an alkaline electrolyser, this process takes place in an electrolytic cell.

The main components of an alkaline electrolyser are an anode, a cathode and an alkaline electrolyte. The anode is positively charged, while the cathode is negatively charged. The electrolyte, which consists of a solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in demineralised water, is located between the anode and cathode. When an electric current is passed through the electrolytic cell, a series of reactions take place. At the anode, water molecules are decomposed into oxygen gas (O2) and positively charged hydrogen ions (H+).Oxygen gas evolution takes place at the anode. At the cathode, the hydrogen ions react with electrons to form molecular hydrogen gas (H2).

The resulting hydrogen gas can be captured and used as a green fuel source.Alkaline-Electrolysers are often used for hydrogen production on a small to medium scale, and their operation is based on the cheap and accessible materials used in the electrolytic cell, such as the alkaline electrolyte.
