History
Douna Machinery's history goes back to 1924. That year, the smithy Firma v.d. Berg & Douna was founded in the Achter de Hoven district of Leeuwarden. The company grew strongly in the years that followed. When Van den Berg left the business in 1937, it continued under the name Douna Machinefabriek en Constructiewerkplaats and developed into an established supplier across a range of fields.
As a family business, Douna reached a turning point in 1987: with no successor left within the family, the company was sold. Machine development continued, and Douna Engineering was established for that purpose. From 1990 onwards, the company focused on the gas industry and became a regular supplier to customers in that sector. In 1997 the business changed hands again, with the new owner maintaining its machine-building course, and in 1998 Douna obtained ISO 9001 certification. In 2002 the company moved to the De Hemrik industrial estate at Hidalgoweg 1 in Leeuwarden.
Douna then embarked on a series of acquisitions. In 2003 it acquired Eurometaal in Zaandam — the toolmaking division of the ammunition manufacturer — which continued and expanded under the name Zaanse Precisie Machinefabriek. In 2004 Logtech of Hoogeveen was added, broadening the company's market focus to the design and production of logistics improvements for the cardboard industry. In 2010 the various parts were brought together under a single name, the Douna Group: Logtech became Douna Projects and the Zaanse Precisie Machinefabriek became Douna Precision. The latter division ceased its activities in early 2019.
In 2019 Douna Machinery was acquired by Ale Procée's Alfa & Omega Investment. Under his leadership, an extensive modernisation of the machinery fleet followed from 2020, and in 2022 Machinefabriek Van der Velde & Boerhof became part of Douna Machinery. In 2024 the company celebrated its centenary. In June 2026, Arno Monincx — through his family investment company Famon — reached agreement with Ale Procée on the acquisition of Douna Machinery, which comprises Machinefabriek Douna in Leeuwarden and Machinefabriek Van der Velde Boerhof in Appelscha.
